ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
This special knife came about as collaboration between Dr. Kevin Robertson, author of the “Perfect Shot” books, knife maker Theuns Prinsloo and me. The story behind it is recounted below and told by Dr Robertson.
The examination process one must endure to become a fully licensed Zimbabwean Professional Hunter involves three stages, the final of which is known as the “proficiency”. For it, your examiners are essentially your “clients” and you must in their presence, track, stalk and shoot either an elephant or a buffalo. No help of any kind, in the form of either trackers or skinners are allowed on such occasions. Those being examined must do all these physically demanding tasks themselves. To make the process easier, five learner PH’s are grouped together so as to be able to assist one another in the skinning and recovery of all animals shot by each member of the group in turn.
When I underwent this interesting experience, those in my group and I ended up skinning and de-boning five elephants in five days. If ever there was a test for a fully functional, totally “practical” knife this was it. All the skinning and cutting caused those with “unpractical” knives to develop blisters on their hands, which then popped. Gut content from the butchering processes soon infected these raw areas. Infection was inevitable, despite precaution, which ultimately resulted in their hands becoming so swollen that it was eventually impossible for them to even shave! The knife which I used was, thanks to my previous veterinary experiences, totally “practical” and “user friendly”. I continually kept it sharp and never developed a blister. My knife was the envy of the others. This experience, and all the dissections necessary for the preparation of the anatomy diagrams in my book, “The Perfect Shot” was the driving force behind the design of this knife.
You’ll be able to use your “Doctari” knife either left or right handed, and with the cutting edge held either upwards or downwards. The handle is especially designed and constructed so as to be smooth and comfortable. The 2.5 mm blade is the ideal thickness for easy cutting, while 12C27 Sandvik Swedish stainless steel, hardened to 58/59 Rockwell possesses the best combination for both edge holding qualities and ease of re-sharpening.
It is our sincere hope you enjoy using this knife and that it will exceed your expectations. Each knife comes with a Mini Edition for Africa of The Perfect Shot.
