Anitque Hunting Spears
Old Maasai Lion Spear

Code: RACO001-5
Price: $699.00
Quantity in Basket: none

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
This is an extremely well crafted Lion Spear that exhibits the traditional scale of these weapons. In Maasai culture, a young teenage boy must kill a lion in “spear to claw” combat as a rite of passage before he can become and adult Moran or warrior. This is a spectacular piece that is 69” overall, with a 35” top section and a 25” bottom metal spike. The shaft is a light in color, which indicates a Junior Moran or teenage Maasai owned this spear. The balance, scale, symmetry and detail indicate a Master Blacksmith made this wonderful weapon. We believe it is at least 100 years old and possibly older as it came out of a private collection that was filled with very old top shelf artifacts. Based on the age, it is very probable this weapon participated in the rite of passage of at least one and maybe several Maasai teenagers. This authentic African collectible would leave us all spellbound if it could talk.

Maasai Lion Spear

Code: RACO001-4
Price: $499.00
Quantity in Basket: none

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
This is one of the newer Lion Spears in our collection and although it is well made it does not have the textbook characteristics of an older one made by a real master. In Maasai culture, a young teenage boy must kill a lion in “spear to claw” combat as a rite of passage before he can become and adult Moran or warrior. This is a nice piece that is 70” overall, with a 32” top section and a 29” bottom metal spike. The shaft is a dark red, which indicates a Senior Moran or Adult Maasai Warrior owned this spear. We believe it is at least 50 years old as it came out of the estate of a gentleman who collected all types of primitive weapons. A very nice, authentic example of a Maasai Lion spear that is easily distinguidable from the inferior quality items made for the curio trade.

Congo Slavers Spear

Code: RACO001-20
Price: $799.00
Quantity in Basket: none

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
This beautiful piece dates to the mid 1800’s and is over 7’ long with a finely forged head. The blade is leaf shaped and still exhibits the original fire blue finish with delicately figured patterns and bright edges. The haft is amazingly light, natural cane with an encrusted finish from years of use. They used a lightweight cane for the shaft to avoid fatigue on long marches. Slavers were the most prosperous of Africans and their weapons were among the finest available, often with embellishments to advertise their success. The only slavers spear we have come across in over two decades of collecting.

Maasai Pike

Code: RACO001-21
Price: $599.00
Quantity in Basket: none

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
This spear came out of estate of a hunter who brought them back from the 1930’s so it is probably just less than 100 years old. Most likely came out of Tanzania as it was in a grouping with other Maasai weapons. It is 66”overall with a 10” blade that is 2” wide. The top metal portion is 16” overall and the bottom metal spike is 12”. This spear features excellent workmanship and a great patina on the red wood shaft with a drying split that runs almost its entire length. This is a unique Maasai piece that is much rarer than the lion spear that is this tribe’s signature weapon.
