Dates back to at least the turn of the century.

|
ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
This long handled axe is one of the more interesting pieces in our collection. Just as the early American pioneers traded with the Indians, the early South African settlers traded with the Zulu. This axe features a trade blade made by Sheffield in Great Britain. The makers mark is partially obscured, but the words Pearson and Sheffield can be read. The shaft has a small tight crack on one side of the handle that is very common. This piece measures 34 overall with a 5 blade. We estimate it to be at least 100 years old and possibly even older. The only one we have ever come across like this in two decades of collecting.

|
ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
This is a large piece that measures 34.5 overall with a massive 16 forged blade that has all the indications of old age. We estimate it is approximately 100 years old, and the oldest of the lot we purchased at auction as this one has a grooved handle not found on more recent pieces. Three bands of multi-colored telephone wire adorn the shaft and these probably added in the past 50 years. Blade is made from beaten iron and the thickness is greatest in the middle and then tapers out to the cutting edges. A great piece that was made by a very skilled craftsman.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
This is a very substantial piece that we estimate is approximately 75 years old. It measures 22 overall with a blade that protrudes 7.5 from the shaft and is 11 long. The blade is firmly anchored into the dark colored, wood head and the overall workmanship is excellent. The blade still has the colored pigment that forms a design on it which is very rare. We believe this is from the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe but since several South African tribes made similar pieces we can not be certain. Great shape and made by a real artisan.
